Update: According to Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria will play Gargamel as a live action character…

Hank Azaria will be PLAYING Gargamel for the Smurfs film, not just providing a voice. He'll be live action. Perfect casting, can't wait!

Original: According to Entertainment Weekly, Hank Azaria (The Simpsons) will voice the evil sorcerer Gargamel in Sony's version of The Smurfs.

Also, EW reports that Jayma Mays (Glee) will play the pregnant wife of Neil Patrick Harris' character. The film will see the happy expectant couple's lives being turned upside-down upon meeting The Smurfs. The movie will take place in Central Park, New York, and will begin production next month.

Confirmed for the film is Jonathan Winters, who returns to the Smurfs franchise to voice Papa Smurf, Katy Perry will voice Smurfette, Alan Cumming voices Gutsy Smurf and George Lopez will voice Grouchy Smurf. Sony is hoping for an August 3rd, 2011 release date.
